Studs are sold by the effective length (From the top of a flat backer up) not the overall length. That is why a 1.375" (1.725" overall length) stud in a 1.25" track has 3/8" of penetration, not 1/8".

Yes, Top Gun SP stud kits can be used in 2-ply tracks.

A single ply (1-ply) snowmobile track uses the same rubber as a 2-ply track — the difference is the reinforcement inside. A 1-ply track has one row of reinforcement cords running through it, while a 2-ply has two rows. That single row of cords makes the track lighter and more flexible.

It's your snowmobile and you are free to do what you want but we do not recommend it. 1. It voids the lifetime warranty and 2. It significantly increases the risk of bending and damaging the track.

Top Gun II studs are built for 2-ply tracks with a standard diameter head and standard backer. Both use the same heat-treated stainless steel body and 80° carbide tip and carry the same lifetime warranty against breakage. The deciding factor is your track: 1-ply gets SP, 2-ply gets Top Gun II.

No, you must use a specific track cutting tool. Using a drill bit can result in pulling out fiberglass cords in your track, permanently damaging it.

With our kit you do not need to retighten after install. Competitors advise on retightening because aluminum nut paired with aluminum backer likes to come loose over time.

With our kit you have the lock nut in addition to the backer which compresses slightly adding additional tension to the nut and will absorb any track shrinkage.

A single ply track has only one row of internal reinforcement cords supporting the stud, so to get the same holding strength a wider surface area is needed across the head and backer. Top Gun SP studs use an XL diameter head paired with a wider Airlite SP backer specifically to distribute the load across a larger footprint of the track. That extra surface area is what keeps the stud anchored without pulling through, tearing, or stressing the single row of cords.
